WHERE am i and WHERE do i want to be: my Kama Muta

Artist Statement

“The continuous conversation between myself and what moves me. This idea that seeks me and is moved by love keeps me wondering about where I am and where I want to be.

“I am surrounded by uncertainty and this vague experience reminds me to appreciate the least desirable moments that come with it; partnership, heartache, anxiety, and obsession. When thinking about this space and how I am surrounded by it, I often think about what I know best, which is myself. Through internal conversation, I digest the meaning of my Kama Muta.

“Being moved by love doesn’t always mean blissful memories. I move with my heart and though the experience is not always concrete, I wonder why I have a need to control uncertainty. Questioning the figure and its relationship within the space develops a conversation that obsessively changes itself until we choose to make the closure with our mind. This tension between figure and ground is the struggle to coherently recognize what is there without knowing where I am at. Through the exploration of mark-making, color, and poetry, I am able to create an experience that surrounds my interpretation of what it feels like to not understand life but be moved by it.”
