Rhyme and Reason

Selections from the Sacramento State Art Collection

February 13 - May 16, 2025

Rhyme and Reason: Selections from the Sacramento State Art Collection highlights the breadth and depth of the university's art collection. Curated by Kelly Lindner, Art Galleries and Collections Curator, the exhibition showcases works first assembled by founding Art Department faculty members in the 1960s as they established a collection of important art objects. The objective of this burgeoning collection was to provide first-hand experiences to students. The Art Collection continues its mission as a teaching collection and has expanded its holdings to over 1,000 objects. Works by Frank Stella and Jun Kaneko set a precedent for future donations including work by HC Westermann, Judith Linhares, Julia Couzens and Cathy Stone.

TANJA GEIS

Casting, Sinking, Feeling

January 21 - February 14, 2025

Bay Area artist Tanja Geis makes place-based paintings, drawings, sculptures, and videos that invite intimacy with human-disturbed ecosystems, spaces, and species. For the Else Gallery, Geis has created an immersive installation that explores the Northern California bull kelp as a resonant symbol of our endangered marine ecosystem. Casting, Sinking, Feeling draws on the visual languages of augury—the practice of reading cast objects and patterns in the environment—to imagine alternative forms of knowing as we face the irreversible human impact on the environment.

This exhibit is made possible by the Art Department’s Visiting Artist Fund. A donation to this fund supports students having direct experiences with professional artists in workshops, studio critiques, lectures, and exhibition contexts.
