General Education
GE Area: D1A (Foundations in Behavioral and Social Sciences)

All students are required to complete a total of 51 units in General Education across 5 broad areas (A, B, C, D, and E).

  • Students are complete 2 courses (6 units) in Area D1. At least 1 course (3 units) must be from D1A. The other course may be from either D1A OR D1B (World Cultures). ECON 1A satisfies part of the D1 requirement.
  • Students are allowed to overlap their GE coursework with their major. However, students may only take a total of 3 courses (lower + upper division) from their major department.
  • Students must take 9 units of upper division GE courses. These courses may be in any GE area besides Area A.

Economics Major
Students who plan to major in Economics may declare the major at any time, but typically students will declare the major after completing at least 2 courses (6 units) of lower division coursework in economics. Since the Economics major is not impacted, students may enroll in upper division coursework, provided they have completed the prerequisites.

The Economics major consits of 42 units (14 courses): [prerequisites noted]

  1. Lower division requirements (3 courses, 9 units)
    • ECON 1A: Introduction to Macroeconomic Analysis
    • ECON 1B: Introduction to Microeconomic Analysis
    • STAT 1: Introduction to Statistics
  2. Upper division core (5 courses, 15 units)
    • ECON 100A: Intermediate Macroeconomics [ECON 1A, ECON 1B]
    • ECON 100B: Intermediate Microeconomics [ECON 1A, ECON 1B]
    • ECON 101: History of Economic Thought [ECON 1A and ECON 1B]
      OR ECON 113: Economic History of the U.S. [ECON 1A]
    • ECON 140: Quantatitive Economic Analysis [ECON 1A, ECON 1B, STAT 1]
    • ECON 145: Economic Research Methods (graduating semester) [ECON 100A, ECON 100B, ECON 140]
  3. Upper division elective courses (6 courses, 18 units)
    • Economics courses numbered 110 or higher.

If you plan to major in Economics, you will complete the following GE areas: D1 (ECON 1A and ECON 1B) and B4 (STAT 1). In addition, you may opt to complete an upper division GE course in either area C1 (ECON 112: European Economic History) or D2 (ECON 181: Economics of Racism).

How to I declare the Economics Major?

What's the difference between majoring in Economics vs. Business?

Economics Minor
Students who plan to minor in Economics may declare the major at any time. Since many economics courses may be counted towards other majors, students (especially in Finance and International Business) may find they can easily complete the minor requirements.

The Economics minor consits of 21 units (7 courses): [prerequisites noted]

  1. Lower division requirements (2 courses, 6 units)
    • ECON 1A: Introduction to Macroeconomic Analysis
    • ECON 1B: Introduction to Microeconomic Analysis
    • STAT 1: Introduction to Statistics
  2. Elective courses (5 courses, 15 units)
    • STAT 1: Introduction to Statistics may be counted toward the Economics minor.
    • 12 units (4 courses) must be completed in Economics courses numbered 100 or higher.

If you plan to major in Economics, you will complete the following GE areas: D1 (ECON 1A and ECON 1B) and B4 (STAT 1). In addition, you may opt to complete an upper division GE course in both area C1 (ECON 112: European Economic History) and D2 (ECON 181: Economics of Racism).

How to I declare the Economics Minor?

Pre-Business Majors
All students who plan to major in Business, must complete the following pre-major courses with a C or better, before declaring the major:

  • ACCY 1: Accounting Fundamentals
  • ACCY 2: Managerial Accounting
  • ECON 1A: Introduction to Macroeconomic Analysis (GE Area D1a)
  • ECON 1B: Introduction to Microeconomic Analysis (GE Area D1a)
  • MATH 24: Modern Business Math (GE Area B4/B5)
  • STAT 1: Introduction to Statistics (GE Area B4/B5)

If you plan to major in Business, you will complete the following GE areas: D1 (ECON 1A and ECON 1B), B4 and B5 (MATH 24 and STAT 1).

The Business major consits of 66-75 units (22-25 courses). The complete requirements are given in the catalog. Please contact the College of Business Undergraduate Program Office to speak with an advisor for details.

Social Science Majors
All students who plan to major in Social Science, must complete the 45 units of core coursework. Both ECON 1A and ECON 1B are core requirements for the Social Science major.

If you plan to major in Social Science, you may complete GE coursework in Areas A, C, and D. The Social Science major consists of 60 units (plus 9 units of optional pre-credential coursework). The complete requirements are given in the catalog. It is recommended that Social Science majors keep regular appointments with the Director of the Social Science Program.

If you are planning on teaching in the social sciences, you may want to complete the Certificate for Economic Education. Contact the Director of the Center for Economic Education.
