G. Student Learning: Evidence - pre/post Student Survey Data
Student Assessment of Learning Gains (SALG) scores
(SALG) http://www.wcer.wisc.edu/salgains/instructor/ is an online survey tool that allows instructors to collect student feedback on a variety of curricular components. Results from two SALG questions that inform the effectiveness of this project are shown below. “Pre” represents data from 25 P107 students (Spring 2005) prior to project implementation. “Post” repesents data from 20 P107 students (Spring 2006) during the 1 year hp project implementation.
The survey revealed a 11%-12% increase in the number of students that report computer simulations and computer data acquisition as “much” or “very much" help in learning. There was also an 8% increase in the number of student who though there was a "fair amount" to a "great deal" of coordination between the technology and the teaching.
Pre/post student reflections
Students in the Spring 2005 (pre project) and Spring 2006 (post project implementaion) submitted a 300 word narrative on the use of technology in teaching and learning. These narrative were coded and analyzed for emergent themes. Preliminary analysis revealed:
1. Students were overwhelmingly fascinated by the tablet feature of the computers!
2. More post project than pre project students were able to articulate specific technology (ex. simulations, data acquisition, excel graphing and charting) that improved their learning
3. More post project than pre project students reported that their experience in P107 and EDTE316 shaped their views of technology use in teaching and learning.
These data together with the broader measure of (CSET) scores further support the assertion that the use of mobile technology combined with research based changes the curriculum in our project improved science learning
