University-Level
Faculty: Take Advantage of the Opportunities
University-level
professors are not teachers. They are scholars, whose purpose is the
creation and distribution of knowledge.
Why
might this be more difficult to you?
Since classroom
instruction is only part of a faculty member's obligation (others include
research/creative activity, University service and Community service), availability out of
class may be more limited than at a Junior College or High School. Additionally,
active participation in research/creative activities may mean a faculty member may need to
travel during the semester, further limiting the availabilty of the instructor. Plan
ahead when studying.
Why is
this an advantage to you?
Up to 50% of a
faculty member's time, even at an instituition like CSUS, is devoted to original research
and/or creative activites. This means that University instructors, unlike those at
Junior Colleges or High Schools, are active participants in the fields you will be
studying. Use this to your advantage by expecting your professors to give you unique
perspectives available to you only at a University. Also, if interested, ask if you
can participate in a research/creative activity project - it should be a benefit of
attending a University.
