Why
Should You Study Astronomy?
Pure Curiosity: The Universe is an amazing place. The beauty
of the Universe, and the incredible objects that make it up, should spark curiosity and
wonder in any thinking individual.
Perspective: Knowing your place in the Universe, and how that
knowledge arose, enriches your existence and gives you greater perspective when dealing
with numerous issues faced by society.
Critical Thinking Skills: Thinking in a scientific manner allows you to
better approach real world problems. The majority (60%) of available jobs in the
next 20 years will require math/science competence, but only 20% of the population will
have those skills (from a recent report by a panel chaired by John Glenn).
It is
for these reasons that a University requires General Education courses. Without
them, you would be attending a technical school. You would not be receiving a University-level
education.
