Courses

  • EDBM 279 Methods of Second Language Acquisition, the class is designed to prepare students for success in the classroom as effective teachers of diverse groups.  By learning and improving their knowledge about theories and methods of second language acquisition, students will feel successful in their classrooms.  Students will complete a lesson plan for grades 4th-12th using the SDAIE (Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English) format.  They will also be responsible for completing in-class quick writes and group writing activities. Finally, students will be encouraged to use critical thinking and problem solving skills independently and in groups, which will prepare them for success both  in school and in the workplace.  This course will cover the following areas:  Historical perspectives, linguistics, Methods of Second Language Acquisition, Writing, Lesson Planning, Law Mandates, and Assessments.  For more information contact me.   • EDBM 272A Language and Literacy for the Bilingual Child, This course is designed to enable students to learn and understand about the Literacy and Language process in regards to the Bilingual Child.  Students will be able to derive and state in written form, a personal philosophy  of teaching literacy to Second Language Learners. They will be responsible for maintaining two students' portfolios, develop and deliver two lesson plans using the SDAIE (Specially Designed Academic Instruction in  English) methodologies, completing in-class quick writes, group discussions, and presentations. This course will focus on the following areas:  Historical Perspectives, Law Mandates, Methods of Second Language Acquisition, Theories, Reading, Writing, Lesson Planning, Culture, and Assessments.
  • EDBM 170 Introduction to Bilingual Education, This class will cover important aspects of the introductory study of bilingual education, including:  Its history in the U.S. and the effects of court rulings and the socio-political climate on state and federal legislation; theory, basic research, evaluation, and program effectiveness; current practices in schools and classrooms. Other factors considered are acquisition, context for learning first and second languages, proficiency and competence in two languages, and use of the function of language.
  • EDTE 309B Language and Literacy for the Bilingual Child, The class is designed to prepare students for success in the classroom as effective teachers of bilingual children by learning and improving their knowledge about Reading and Writing strategies in English and Spanish.  Students will master the reading terminology required to pass the RICA exam.  They will learn different Reading Strategies such as:  Read Aloud, Shared Reading, Guided Reading, Phonemic Awareness, and Spelling Development.  Students will also learn about the Writing process and become familiar with different types of assessments.
