Wayne Thiebaud
Thiebaud Print Collection
Born in 1920 in Arizona, CA, Wayne Thiebaud received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in art from California State University, Sacramento. He began his teaching career at Sacramento City College and maintained a thirty-year tenure at the University of California, Davis. He has served as a visiting professor at Harvard and Yale, and holds several honorary doctorates.
Our robust collection includes over 100 works spanning Thiebaud's early prints, his work as an undergraduate at CSU Sacramento and continuing into his professional work up to 2004. Gifted to Sacramento State by an anonymous donor under the leadership of Phil Hitchcock, founding director of the Library Gallery, the collection was organized by Wayne Thiebaud and Paul Thiebaud.
Thiebaud is best known for his cityscapes and pastry paintings, recognized for his intense use of color and thickly textured paint application. He has exhibited his work world-wide with well over 100 solo exhibitions with work included in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His work was recently on view locally here in Sacramento at the Crocker Art Museum.
