Magnetic Fields: Jupiter's Moons
- Suprisingly, perhaps, magnetic
fields have been detected around moons in the outer solar system. The spacecraft,
Galileo, made the first such detection around the Jovian moon, Ganymede. Play the
following clip to hear:
- The audio pitch is plotted on
the vertical axis, while time is plotted on the horizontal axis. As the clip plays,
the sliding bar illustrates where on the graph the corresponding audio occurs. Note
the correlations.
- The pitch of the audio tone
corresponds with the density of charged particles encountered by the Galileo spacecraft
- Entry into the magnetosphere of
Ganymede occurs 6-10 seconds into the clip
Does this
all sound familiar?
