Planetary Magnetic Fields: Saturn

  • Recall that Saturn has aurorae, and a magnetic field was detected by spacecraft sent to the planet.
  • Saturn's magnetic field is Intermediate between Jupiter and Earth: It is 540 times stronger than Earth’s, but it is 36 times weaker than Jupiter’s.
  • Saturn rotates rapidly, in about 10.6 hours, so the dynamo effect indicates a fluid, conducting interior, similar to Jupiter's, must exist.
  • Gas from Titan’s atmosphere contributes nitrogen to the Saturnian magnetosphere.
  • Saturnian satellites and rings absorb charged particles, making inner regions of the magnetosphere free of particles.
