Planetary
Magnetic Fields: Saturn
- Recall that Saturn has aurorae,
and a magnetic field was detected by spacecraft sent to the planet.
- Saturn's magnetic field is
Intermediate between Jupiter and Earth: It is 540 times stronger than Earths, but it
is 36 times weaker than Jupiters.
- Saturn rotates rapidly, in
about 10.6 hours, so the dynamo effect indicates a fluid, conducting interior, similar to
Jupiter's, must exist.
- Gas from Titans
atmosphere contributes nitrogen to the Saturnian magnetosphere.
- Saturnian satellites and rings
absorb charged particles, making inner regions of the magnetosphere free of particles.
