Planetary
Magnetic Fields: Jupiter
- Recall that Jupiter rotates
with a period of about 10 hours. The very fast rotation would provide for a strong
magnetic field, if there is a fluid, conducting core.
Given the
strength and size of Jupiter's magnetic field, there must be a fluid, conducting material
lurking inside Jupiter.
- So far the fluid, conducting
core has been iron, but that is not true for Jupiter. We will see what conducting,
fluid material lurks inside Jupiter later in the semester.
