Hive6 Leadership: Pillars of Success
The Hive6 Leadership: Pillars of Success is a program to advance Sac State leadership expertise and effectiveness within our managers (MPP) across the university.
Program Purpose and Highlights
- Align leadership across multiple organizational levels of the university in accordance with the university Strategic Plan, strategic initiatives, and Hive6 Leadership: Pillars of Success.
- Create common behavioral expectations and shared language across leadership.
- Develop a network of leaders who can balance managing current needs while leading toward the future.
- Learn from one another, enhance collaborative thinking, and foster a sense of belonging among university leaders.
By creating a network of leaders who have shared expectations, and learn from one another in a collaborative environment, we aim to strengthen our entire university community.
Please note sessions are limited to MPP only.
Pillars of Success
Using the hornet’s hexagonal nest cell as inspiration, the Hive6 Leadership: Pillars of Success focus on six primary competencies and key behaviors for leaders at Sac State. The Pillars of Success are:
Key Behaviors
- Identifies and hires talent, onboards, trains, develops, gives recognition, performance management.
- Sets and communicates clear expectations; communicates often to check-in, provide feedback and guidance.
- Succession planning; determines the talent and staffing needs of the unit.

Key Behaviors
- Encourages open exchange of ideas; values honest input.
- Cascades messages timely and appropriately.
- Actively listens; receives and implements feedback.
- Communicates well verbally and in writing; is transparent.
- Communicates truth with empathy even when it’s challenging, uncomfortable.
Key Behaviors
- Promotes engagement, development, and equitable treatment and opportunity.
- Demonstrates respect for individual differences and fosters sense of belonging.
- Speaks out against insensitive words/actions or those inconsistent with mission and values.
- Identifies inequitable policies and practices in their unit and implements improvement strategies to ensure more equitable outcomes.

- Builds and communicates a compelling vision that reflects the needs of own area that is aligned with the University’s Strategic Imperatives.
- Inspires and influences team to translate vision into action and creative positive organizational change.
- Sets priorities and holds self and team accountable for accomplishing goals and objectives.

- Fosters collaboration and team effectiveness.
- Works cooperatively and effectively with others to achieve common goals.
- Builds and maintains relationships with others based on mutual respect and trust.
- Uses effective emotional intelligence to create long-lasting and effective relationships.

- Understands industry and trends. Addresses issues to create, sustain competitive advantage. Uncovers new opportunities to create value.
- Identifies and solves problems. Changes approach to a problem or situation according to the circumstances.
- Effectively manages resources (to include budget, time and staff) to support strategic priorities.
- Continues to evolve. Anticipates change and challenges. Develops long-term plans to guide the team.
