Won Ju Lim: Castings
Castings presents a 15-year exhibition survey of Los Angeles-based artist Won Ju Lim. Lim’s multi-media investigations explore the intersection of architecture, sculpture, and film, incorporating layered references to Baroque and early 20th century architecture, science fiction films, and literature. Her sculptures are presented both as distinct objects and integrated into large-scale installations with light and shadow as additional sculptural elements. Lim has a background in architecture and throughout her practice has employed model building and scale shifts as artistic strategies. The work is simultaneously object then model, sculpture then architecture, form then function. Within these dualities of imagined and real space, Lim questions the role of memory in our experience of the built environment.
Since 2007, Marcel Proust has been the artist's muse. In Lim’s most recent film, Casting II, premiered in this exhibition, the French writer is both the subject and a point of departure. Overlaying Proust’s narrative from his epic novel In Search of Lost Time and descriptions from Celeste Albaret’s memoir, Proust’s longtime housekeeper, the film shifts between multiple perspectives. Lim introduces architectural models as protagonists with scenes of ethereal settings that echo the narration and others that focus on the hand of the artist manipulating the objects. It is in Proust’s detailed descriptions of his reclusive life and domestic spaces and Albaret’s intimate recollections that Lim’s sculptures come to life.
Won Ju Lim’s work has been exhibited worldwide, including the Elzig Museum, Istanbul, Turkey; Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju, Korea; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, California; St. Louis Art Museum, Missouri, and Vancouver Art Gallery, British Columbia, Canada; among others. She was awarded a Master of Fine Arts from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. This is her first survey exhibition presented in the United States. Born in Gwangju, Korea, Lim is currently based in Los Angeles, California.
