Overview of the Black Honors College (BHC) Minor Programs

The BHC Minor Program offers a robust, unique and transformative educational experience that integrates leadership training with specialized practical and interdisciplinary knowledge, preparing students for leadership roles across diverse fields and helping them tackle the complex issues of today’s world. 

The BHC Minor Programs provide students with a distinctive opportunity to specialize in one of three innovative and dynamic areas: 

  • Minor in Leadership 
  • Minor in Leadership, Land, and Real Estate Development 
  • Minor in Leadership, Health, and Aging 

Interdisciplinary Curriculum 

The curriculum for each minor is centered on developing essential leadership competencies, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Students engage in coursework and internship that integrates theoretical frameworks with practical application, ensuring students not only gain intellectual insight but also develop the tools needed to act as leaders in their respective disciplines. 

  • Minor in Leadership: Focuses on core leadership principles, organizational dynamics, and effective communication strategies. 
  • Minor in Leadership, Land, and Real Estate Development: Combines leadership development with a specialized focus on real estate, urban planning, and land management. 
  • Minor in Leadership, Health, and Aging: Merges leadership techniques with a focus on health systems, gerontology, and the aging population, addressing contemporary challenges in healthcare. 

Customized Learning Experience 

The BHC Minor Program offers an intentionally highly customized and flexible learning experience. Each student selects courses across a range of disciplines and gains a broad, interdisciplinary understanding that strengthens their ability to approach complex problems with innovative solutions. In addition, this personalized approach helps students stay ahead of emerging trends and be better prepared to adapt to the evolving demands of their fields. 

Beyond the Classroom: Real-World Application 

The BHC Minor Program emphasizes practical, hands-on learning experiences that connect academic theory with real-world application. Students engage in internships, collaborative projects, and community initiatives that allow them to apply their leadership skills and knowledge in dynamic environments. These experiences are designed to help students make a tangible impact in their communities and industries and prepare them to become effective, change-making leaders. 

BHC Minor Programs Requirements 

  • Enrollment in the Black Honors College 
  • Maintain a 3.5 GPA falling below 3.2 GPA may affect continued participation 
  • 12 units of coursework and practicum 
  • A public forum presentation of the Honors project during the senior year 

Additional Notes: 

  • The minor is required for Transfer, Junior, and Sophomore students. 
  • First Year Incoming Scholars who wish to enroll in any of the minors will be considered on a case-by-case basis, with review of their workload and academic goals. 

Minor in Leadership (12 Units) 

A Minor in Leadership provides students with foundational knowledge and skills to lead effectively in various professional, social, and organizational contexts. It focuses on the development of leadership capabilities, including communication, decision-making, conflict resolution, team building, ethical responsibility, and strategic thinking. The minor aims to help students develop practical leadership skills that are applicable in any field or organization. BHC is collaborating with the College of Education to develop this Minor.

Minor in Leadership, Land, and Real Estate Development (12 Units) 

The Black Honors College (BHC) requires its scholars to enroll in a minor. The minor in Leadership, Land and Real Estate Development, exposes BHC scholars to the dynamic world of land development and real estate, offering insights into potential career paths and leadership opportunities in a sector that significantly impacts the growth and infrastructure of local communities. BHC is collaborating with the Department of Finance (COB), Department of Construction Management (College of ECE) and the GE Honor's Program to develop this minor.

  • BHC 198 Practicum

Minor in Leadership, Health, and Aging (15 Units) 

The Department of Gerontology has partnered with the Black Honors College (BHC) to create this minor that will increase the needed diversity of the workforce. This minor allows students to approach the topic of aging from multiple perspectives, making them more versatile professionals. The experience of aging can differ significantly based on a person’s background. Understanding the aging process with this minor can help design, implement, and lead programs and services that improve health in the aging process and the overall quality of life of older adults, their families, and their care providers.
