Parking Permit Privileges
Parking privileges at Sac State are provided in accordance with each permit classification. Paid parking is required at all times when parking on campus. All forms of paid parking are non-transferable. Parking privileges may be revoked at any time for individuals found sharing or falsely using another individual’s virtual or physical permit.
Sac State uses Virtual Permits. You will not need to display a physical hangtag or paper permit if you have purchased a virtual permit. Please ensure your license plate number has been entered correctly into Online Parking Services to avoid unnecessary citations. View our Register Your License Plate page for more information.
- A parking permit is valid for use only by the person who purchased the parking permit.
- Only one vehicle may use a parking permit each day.
- The permit holder is responsible for all citations issued to vehicles linked to their permit.
- It is important to familiarize yourself with the various types of parking permits Sac State offers and the locations in which they are valid.
- Charges are for the use of parking space only. We assume no responsibility whatsoever for loss or damage due to fire, theft, collision or otherwise to the vehicle or its contents however caused.
- A parking permit does not guarantee a parking space in any given area at any given time.
Virtual Permits
- Visitor may purchase 2-hour and daily parking permits from PayByPhone and Permit Machines.
- Visitor parking permits are only valid in student parking spaces.
- Carpoolers may share the price of a parking permit and park in preferential designated carpool spaces.
- Carpool parking permits must be purchased in person at the UTAPS office.
- Employee and student semester parking permits may be exchanged at no cost for carpool parking permits.
- A carpool consists of two or more people per vehicle, who must arrive in a carpool space together.
- Carpool spaces are located on the first floors of Parking Structure 1 and Parking Structure 3. Carpool spaces are also located on floors 1-5 of Parking Structure 5.
- Carpool spaces are enforced until 11am in Parking Structures 1 and 3. After 11am, these spaces are enforced as student spaces. In Parking Structure 5, the EV/Carpool spaces are enforced as such all day, every day.
- To be eligible to use these spaces:
- The vehicle must display a valid CAV decal from California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or be an eligible vehicle on the California Air Water Resources Board list.
- The vehicle’s license plate must be registered and linked to a valid Sac State parking permit.
- Electric Vehicles (EV), also known as plug-in electric vehicles, derive all or part of their power from electricity supplied by the electric grid. EVs include AEVs and PHEVs and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs).
- To be eligible to use disabled parking spaces:
- The vehicle must display a valid disabled placard or disabled license plate.
- The vehicle’s license plate must be registered and linked to a valid Sac State parking permit.
- Emeritus employees are eligible to receive a courtesy emeritus employee parking permit.
- Emeritus employees who return to the campus after retirement to work for pay are required to pay to park during that time.
- Emeritus parking permits are valid in employee and student parking spaces.

- Employee parking permits are valid in employee as well as student spaces, unless otherwise posted.
- If receiving 12 paychecks per year, most employees may also pay for their parking permits on a monthly basis via payroll deduction.
- A motorcycle parking permit is valid only in motorcycle spaces.
- As an alternative to purchasing a motorcycle-only parking permit, people who drive a car/truck and ride motorcycles may purchase a standard student or employee parking permit. The standard student or employee parking permit allows a motorcycle to be parked legally in a motorcycle OR regular vehicle parking space.
- Faculty members in a non-working capacity, who come to the campus during the Summer, may request a courtesy non-teaching employee parking permit.
- This permit is intended to accommodate the occasional visit to the campus to facilitate academic endeavors.
- Faculty members who are in a working capacity during the summer are required to purchase a parking permit for that period of time.

- Renaissance Society members are eligible to purchase a discounted parking permit valid in employee and student spaces.
- Renaissance Society parking permits are only valid on Fridays and Saturdays.

- Residence Hall visitors may purchase 2-HOUR and DAILY visitor permits using PayByPhone or Permit Machines and park in standard student parking spaces.
- Residence Hall visitors that require overnight parking are eligible to use Residence Hall Visitor parking permits purchased by the residence hall student. The residence hall student can purchase these in Online Parking Services or at the UTAPS office.
- Student parking permits are valid in standard student parking spaces.
- Timed parking without a valid Sacramento State parking permit is available throughout campus.
- Timed parking spaces may be used by the same vehicle only once in each parking lot in a 24-hour period.
- Timed parking with a valid Sacramento State parking permit required; is also available throughout campus. Please read timed parking signs carefully.
- Vendors and contractors may purchase 2-hour and daily visitor parking permits from PayByPhone and Permit Machines.

- Weekly parking permits are available to Sac State employees and students. Weekly parking permits may be purchased in one (1) week increments. Usage of the weekly parking permit is the same as employee and student parking permits. Weekly parking permits are not refundable.
Parking Standards
- Passenger load zones are intended for the immediate loading and unloading of passengers. Waiting for passengers is not permitted and parking officers reserve the right to warn or cite a vehicle for waiting.
- Load zones that are not specifically marked as Passenger load zones are intended for the active loading and unloading of equipment. Parking officers closely monitor load zones and reserve the right to warn or cite a vehicle if no activity is seen in 30 minutes.
- Note, load zones are not parking spaces, even for vehicles displaying a disabled placard or license plates.
- Parking is authorized in designated parking spaces only.
- Parking spaces cannot be created.
- A parking space is designated by a white parking space line on each side or end of the vehicle. Vehicles must fit within the parking space lines.
- In any unpaved parking lot on campus, including Lot 2A and student section of Lot 9, vehicles must be parked in an orderly manner at a wheel stop.at Sac State.
- Off-peak parking periods are defined as:
- Monday-Friday 4:30pm to midnight during the Fall and Spring semesters.
- Saturday, Sunday, and campus closure holidays 4:30am to midnight.
- Summer, Winter intersession, Spring Recess and Finals week Monday - Sunday 4:30am to midnight.
- During off-peak parking periods, most student and employee parking spaces are open to all Sac State parking permits with the following exceptions:
- An employee parking permit is required at all times in the employee spaces located around the Residence Hall complex and the employee spaces in Parking Structure 1 (PS1).
- A Residence Hall parking permit is required at all times in Residence Hall spaces in Lot 2 and the 5th/6th floors of Parking Structure 5 (PS5).
- Any specially marked parking space, such as, (but not limited to) BZ, Speech & Hearing, Administrative, requires a special permit at all times.
- During off-peak parking periods, carpool spaces in Parking Structures 1 & 3 are enforced as student spaces.
- Overnight parking is defined as parking between the hours of midnight and 4:30am. With the exception of Residence Hall permitted vehicles in assigned parking lots and, approved campus vehicles, overnight parking and/or camping is prohibited at Sac State.
