In any research, the investigator needs to be aware of the health and privacy of human subjects.

Research is defined as an investigation designed to produce generalizable knowledge -published data.

Some protocols are exempt.

The laws:

The Family Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (Buckley Amendment)

• Designed to protect the privacy of students' educational records
• Data that identifies the students may not be made available unless written permission is acquired from the students' parent or legal guardian

National Research Act of 1974

• Proposed research involving human participants needs to be reviewed and approved by an authorized group prior to the execution of the research

Informed Consent

• Explain the purpose and procedure
• Possible risks and benefits (Do no harm!)
• Compensation if any
• Right to refuse or withdraw
• Confidentiality statement
• Bill of rights (doc) on first page of consent form
• Questions
• Signature
