Other preparations:

On a Note or Web, put your Action Research

  1. Questions
  2. Context of the research (who, what, where, and when)
  3. Brief plans for data collection (observations, interviews, and document mining)

We have arranged the groups so that no one is with his or her team members tonight -maybe.

Leaders, we suggest the following format.

  • First, to get an understanding of what each person in the group is researching, ask each to present a Note or Web of AR questions and brief plans for interviews, observations and document mining (as stated in the preparations section above).
  • Discuss the value of each format (observations, interviews, and document mining) following the presentations.
  • Have a recorder capture to Word, a web-authoring application or a simple TI note.

Scaffolds for data mining: Extracting themes

  • Look over this set of clustered interview questions (7K pdf) and this interview log (12K pdf) and observe the format. These are simply scaffolds for you.
  • If you have time, skim this transcribed interview (80k pdf). This is the long version, and it is very time consuming. Sometimes this needs to be done to establish themes as you will see. Themes can be established successfully, however, using the interview log format above.
  • Finally, here is a set of field notes (23K pdf) based on an observation in a computer lab. Once again, you can see the initial themes extracted from the data.

Add any final discussion comments to your recorder's notes.

8:30 Take a break.

8:45 - 9:15 In preparation for the final discussions tonight, check the remainder of the agenda for the evening.
