The Dewey Debate
We have read and responded to some interesting articles and prompts in the past year. Most of the readings have been concerned with technology, strategies, and professional development. In Education 251 (Duane's class), you read about dominant hegemonies and economic disparity and the relationship these realities have to modern pedagogy. It is time to examine the thinking of one of the greatest educational theorists, John Dewey.
Read carefully the first chapter of Democracy and Education. Consider the arguments John Dewey makes for the importance of communication with regard to the renewal of society. Consider also the position Dewey might take with regard to the use of computer and network technology in schools were he writing and teaching today. On the Phorum, respond according to the position assigned to you below and then respond to posts from the other side.
Pro: Dewey would be an advocate for the infusion of computer applications within the school curriculum. | Con: Dewey would NOT be an advocate for the infusion of computer applications within the school curriculum. |
These individuals will post to the thread entitled "Dewey would be an advocate". Once your argument is made, look over the posts for the opposite side. Respond briefly to at least two of the arguments. |
