Source Analyses --> Step 3

At the end of units 2 & 4, when you are NOT writing an Observation Report, you must submit an analysis of one assigned readings from the half of the course you have just completed; additional readings are also available to earn extra credit. As for observation reports, you write for a peer who is unfamiliar with the topic, since several student Source Analyses will be assigned as readings for the final TRA and final application exercise.

A word of CAUTION: shorter sources are often more difficult to analyze.

Step 3: Essay

Expand the three parts of your SAW into a 3-4 page, 12" font double spaced essay, making sure to do the following.

  • Drawing on your response to A(i), introduce the source by highlighting not only the author and title but also the original source title and whether it is translated, excerpted and/or paraphrased.

  • Use your responses to B(i)-(ii) to present an overall claim about the way the practice & reflection associated with the source seem to influence one another.
  • Drawing on A(ii)-(iii), describe and cite page numbers for details about practice & reflection from the first third of the source that illustrate your overall claim based on B(i)-(ii).

    IMPORTANT: If you quote one or more passages from the text, make sure to lead in to and follow up your quotation with a broad summary of what precedes and what follows the passage(s), respectively. (Condense any passage that is longer than 3 sentences, using ellipses ("..."), but make sure to preserve the grammatical integrity of the original.) But note that your description will usually be more precise if you *WEAVE TOGETHER DETAILS FROM SEVERAL DIFFERENT PAGES WITH YOUR OWN PARAPHRASING* rather than focusing on specific passages.

  • Providing a transition to the next example, describe details about practice & reflection from the second third of the source that illustrate your overall claim based on B(i)-(ii), and then again with a transition, details about practice & reflection from the final third of the source.

  • Conclude with section C, making sure to include both comparison and contrast with specific details & citation of page numbers from one of the other sources assigned for the relevant half of the course (Units 1-2 or Units 3-4).

The Source Analysis essay for Units 1-2 must be submitted via the appropriate link in the Assignments tab in SacCT by Saturday, 10/27 and submitted in printed form at the following Mondays' class. For Units 3-4, the essay must be submitted in SacCT by Saturday, 10/27 and in printed form at MND 2016 on Wednesday, 12/12.
