The section of the east gate, shown below on the left, displays royal elephants as well as peacocks (see close-up on bottom right), which are also associated with kings. The woman hanging from a mango tree on the right side of the first gateway arch is often thought to represent a female nature spirit or yakshi, commonly portrayed at this and other stupa sites. The top image on the left, on the other hand--a female surrounded by elephants--is usually identified as the Hindu deity Lakshmi, goddess of abundance, who is still commonly worshipped in India today.
