Finally, a significant number of carvings depict devotion to trees. The Buddha spent the night of his awakening under a tree, which later came to be known as the “Bodhi (Awakening) Tree,” and worshiped as a reminder of the Buddha’s attainment. The carving below depicts the emperor Ashoka’s visit to the actual site of the tree at Bodh Gaya in northeast India. The small figure shown to the right of the tree is actually the emperor himself, with his royal elephant in the background. Legends claim that Ashoka himself traveled to the site to water the tree, which had been neglected by its former caretaker. Also difficult to see in this picture, the tree has an empty throne below it, which represents the Buddha’s seat.
