Fall Dinner w/ Inaugural Scholarship Recipients, Nov. 1, 2013

It was another uncharacteristically warm day for the first of November. The Alumni Center was set up for a served dinner, a welcome departure from our traditional buffets. We had 105 enthusiastic retirees and guests attending. A highlight of the evening was the introduction of our first scholarship recipients and their parents. To be eligible for the new $1500 Retirees Association Scholarship applicants must have a parent working on campus, have completed a minimum of 15 units at CSUS, have a minimum CSUS GPA of 3.0, be enrolled full time, and be a sophomore, junior, or senior. Financial need may be considered but is not required. Two scholarships will be given each year. Our first recipients are Casey McAtee and Sara Wilson.

Casey McAtee, a junior Speech Pathology Major could not join us because she is studying in Leeds, England this semester. Her mother, Jerri McAtee, the Administrative Coordinator for the Department of Physical Therapy, joined us. Casey plans to complete a masters in Speech Pathology and work as a speech pathologist in a Sacramento area school district.

Sara Wilson was able to attend the dinner with her mother, Marty, and boyfriend Michael. Sara, also a junior, is majoring in History and minoring in Goverment. She plans to complete a PhD in History and teach at the college level. (Dick Kornweibel was on hand to offer career counseling.) Mom Marty is an Associate Professor in the College of Business.

Board President Tom Griffith introduced new members: Evelyn Bradley-Owens, Bob Buckley, Sam Hill, Irene Lara (from Sacramento City College), and Helen Yelverton. Sam received an enthusiastic response when he announced he had recently married his boyfriend. Tom thanked departing board members Cindy Collins (Member at Large), and Dick Kornweibel (Past President and Faculty Senate Representative). Board Secretary Larry Glasmire acknowledged the contributions Tom has made during his two years as president. A brief business meeting was held and David Wagner was unanimously elected president for 2014.

Thanks to Dinner Committee members Nancy Tooker (Chair), Linda Martin, Karen Peterson and Jean Torcom for a fun event, and to Photographers Nancy Fox and Nancy Wylie for taking these photos. Husbands Ron Peterson and Chris Tooker also helped with the event.
