NUFD Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I major in Nutrition and Food?
Impact on Health: This field plays a crucial role in disease prevention and health promotion. By understanding nutrition, you can help individuals and communities make healthier choices.
Diverse Career Opportunities: Graduates can pursue various career options, including dietetics, food science, public health, and nutrition education.
Growing Demand: With increasing awareness of health and wellness, there is a growing need for professionals in these fields. For instance, the employment of dietitians and nutritionists in California is projected to grow 20% from 2016-2026 (State of California Employment Development Department).
What if I am interested in declaring the NUFD major?
Newly admitted students that would like to declare the NUFD major must meet with an academic advisor to go over major requirements, course planning, and the declaration process. When declaring the NUFD major, students are not limited to only speaking with NUFD faculty advisors. They can also reach out to other faculty members on campus to asssist them with declaring.
Can I complete your program(s) fully online?
In short, it is possible to complete the required upper division BS NUFD coursework online within two years. Our program is not fully remote. We offer both in-person and online options for upper division courses in the BS at least once every two years, which allows students to complete their required coursework in either modality within two years after obtaining their prerequisites and general education courses.
The dietetics concentration cannot be completed online, as these courses are offered only in-person on campus at this time.
I want to become a dietitian. Can I just complete the BS NUFD?
If you are interested in becoming a registered dietitian (RD/RDN), you must complete the BS NUFD and declare the Dietetics Concentration for our accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD). The Dietetics Concentration includes additional coursework required to become eligible for the RDN process.
Our MS NUFD does not include the coursework necessary for DPD completion. If you are interested in pursuing the DPD in addition to the MS, please meet with a NUFD advisor.
