Services
The Geospatial Centroid promotes, integrates, and advances the use of geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial data in support of a broad-range of research, teaching, and service-related purposes to facilitate the California State University, Sacramento campus’s mission as an anchor university. We seek to facilitate collaborations among faculty, students, government agencies, non-profits, and organizations in the local community who benefit from geospatial data, spatial management and analysis, and cartographic/geovisualization outputs.
This includes:
- Consultation and coordination, including needs and limitations assessments, technology advocacy, and methods development
- Enabling clients to use GIS tools and geospatial technologies
- Project support, including data acquisition, georeferencing, and data management
- Obtaining and accessing data (e.g., from Web pages, APIs, databases)
- Approaches for cleaning and transforming data
- Programming support for automating geospatial processes and data cleaning
- Structuring data for geospatial analysis (ex: database, geodatabase, flat file)
- Data analysis via statistical and spatial modeling
- Visualization of data for both exploratory analysis and publication graphics

"Working with Sac State's Geography Department and Geospatial Centroid was a joy from the very beginning! Matt and Anna were enthusiastic partners who immediately saw an opportunity for their students to shape the way Sacramento interacts with its landscape.
It was a gift to work with Dr. Anna Klimaszewski-Patterson (a.k.a."KP") because she has the complete skill set for a real-world project like Mildly Scenic. KP is fluent in both GIS software and graphic design, so the process felt seamless from where I sat as the client. She masterfully delegated the work into bite-sized segments, allowing each of her students to contribute to the final product.
By also putting Mildly Scenic at the center of the Data Acquisition and Management coursework, students collectively churned out 18 original maps for the vast network of river trails, many of which have never been published in a trail guide or on a county map. The work of these Sac State Geography students is prominently featured throughout the trail guide.
Put simply, Mildly Scenic would not be the resource it is without the dedication, vision, and expertise of the Geography Department, the Centroid, and its students."

Consultations
The Geospatial Centroid offers free, one-hour initial consultations for University and non-profit community members to obtain advice and/or help on conceptual and technical GIS issues, and on designing or working with geospatial data.
For consultations beyond one hour that are not in relation to grant or contract proposals, please contact the Centroid for pricing.
Collaborations
The Geospatial Centroid works to collaborate with researchers across Sacramento State University on grant and contract proposals, funded research, and pilot projects.
We also work with members of the Sacramento-area community on grant and contract proposals, training programs and opportunities, and non-profit projects.
We provide a breadth of expertise in geospatial science and geographic principles to facilitate and help expand research in a variety of disciplines, from social to physical sciences. Explore the research interests of our faculty members
