Public Behavioral Health MSW Training Program

Preparing Future Behavioral Health Leaders in Public Systems

The Public Behavioral Health (PBH) MSW Training Program is a statewide workforce development initiative that prepares Master of Social Work (MSW) students for careers in publicly funded behavioral health settings. The program provides:

  • Specialized training in evidence-based behavioral health care
  • Integration of behavioral health services across public systems (schools, hospitals, corrections, etc.)
  • Financial support through a $25,000 stipend for eligible students

Program Eligibility

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be enrolled in a participating MSW program (full-time, part-time, or advanced standing)
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Be matched with a publicly funded behavioral health field placement
  • Not receive funding from another HCAI-administered training program

Commitment & Post-Graduation Requirements

Your Responsibilities as a PBH Trainee:

  • Service Commitment – Work 12 months full-time in a publicly funded behavioral health setting for each year of training received.
  • Licensure Requirement – Pursue LCSW licensure, including:
    • Registering as an Associate Clinical Social Worker (ACSW)
    • Accruing supervision hours
    • Preparing for the ASWB Clinical Exam
