Janette Hernandez, M.S.

Janette joined the Sac State team in Spring of 2022. Before coming to Sac State, she served undergraduate students as a dedicated academic advisor at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB). Prior to her position at CSUMB, Janette held positions with two consecutive institutional grants from the U.S. Department of Education’s Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program at California State University, Fullerton. She earned her Bachelors in Psychology and Social Behavior from UC Irvine, her masters in Clinical Psychology from CSU Fullerton, and is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in Educational Leadership at Sac State. She is proud to be part of the Sac State family and serving Sac State students through the College of Health and Human Services’ Student Success Center.

Joanna Sampanis has joined the College of Health and Human Services as an advisor and specialist in the Student Success Center. She brings an extensive background in student services that includes academic advising, transfer credit articulation, and degree completion solutions. Joanna is “Made at Sac State” with degrees in Philosophy and English but her post-baccalaureate pursuits include educational technology, instructional design, and popular media. She enjoys working with students toward achieving their professional development goals through thoughtful academic planning and advocacy. Please feel free to check-in with her and share whatever interests you!

Andrea Becker, Ph.D.

Dr. Andrea Becker is the Director of the Health Science Program and an Associate Professor in the Department of Kinesiology (2017-present). She is an active member of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology and serves on the editorial board for the International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching. Outside of academia, Dr. Becker is a Sport Psychology Coach for the USA Men’s Volleyball Team (2013-present) and works with a number of other athletes at the professional and collegiate levels. Prior to Sac State, she spent ten years as a professor in the Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton (2007-2017), and also coached at UCLA (2012-2015) and UC, Irvine (2011-2012). A native of Martinez, California, Dr. Becker earned her PhD in Sport Studies from the University of Tennessee (2007), and her MS (2004) and BS (2001) degrees in Kinesiology and Sport Performance from Sacramento State University. During her undergraduate studies, Becker played on the Sacramento State Softball team (1997-01). Go Hornets!

Having previously supported the Health Science program as a faculty advisor, Dr. Aishah Patterson will serve as the Interim Director of Health Science during the Spring, 2024 term.

Dr. Patterson is a licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Minor Information

Supplemental Courses & Potential Minors

The new Health Science program (effective Fall 2020) is the new pathway towards Nursing. If students decide to complete the BS in Health Science it is strongly encouraged to select a minor to fulfill foundational background in an area of interest and to help meet all university unit requirements.

The information below provides units which may allow for the completion of a related minor in the four-year academic plan (two-year for transfers).

Please consult with the CHHS Student Success Center regarding the best academic plan for you.
