History And Purpose

The Order of the Engineer is a distinguished tradition that recognizes graduating engineering students as they take the "Obligation of an Engineer"—a public pledge to uphold the highest standards of ethics, integrity, and professionalism in their work.

During the Ring Ceremony, candidates are formally inducted into the Order and receive a stainless steel ring worn on the fifth finger of the working hand. This ring symbolizes their lifelong commitment to the engineering profession and its ethical responsibilities.

Inspired by the Hippocratic Oath taken by medical professionals, the Obligation of an Engineer reflects the core values found in the codes of ethics of major engineering societies. It serves as a solemn promise to protect the public, uphold the dignity of the profession, and responsibly steward Earth’s resources.

The Order is not a traditional membership organization—there are no meetings or dues. Instead, it serves as a symbolic commitment, uniting engineers in a shared purpose to serve humanity with integrity and skill.
