Carolyn Hove English Horn Masterclasses
June 24-28, 2024
Spend a week with Carolyn Hove, solo English horn of the LA Philharmonic! Gain skill and insight into the most demanding orchestral excerpts and popular solo literature & enhance your reed making.
The week begins with a recital given by Carolyn Hove on Monday, June 24, 2024 at 7:00 PM (open to the public, admission $15 general, $10 senior, $5 student, free to workshop participants) in the Capistrano Concert Hall.
Master classes, small group reed making sessions, rehearsals with accompanist, and instrument adjustment classes begin Tuesday morning and are scheduled through Friday afternoon.
The week concludes with a recital featuring the registered performers on Friday, June 28, 2024 at 6:00 PM (open to the public, free).

What to Expect
World class instruction & inspiration with one-on-one coaching on assigned orchestral excerpts, solo English horn repertoire with reed making classes (open to auditors) provided by Ms. Hove. Expert repair, adjustments, supplies & instruction will be provided by Mark Chudnow.

Who Can Attend
Performers: Adults, age 18 years and older, from all experience levels are invited to apply. After reviewing all Applications, Performers will be chosen based on their goals and experience level. Class size is limited to 20 Performers. Performers will play for Ms. Hove during masterclass sessions (orchestral literature and solo literature), receive individual attention during the small group reed making sessions, rehearse with an accompanist, and participate in the Closing Recital. Three courses on Oboe and English horn Adjustment given by Mark Chudnow are also included.
Auditors: must be at lest 18 years of age in order to apply, unless they have received special permission by the host. Auditors may attend and observe all masterclasses, the three courses on Oboe and English horn Adjustment given by Mark Chudnow, but do not perform or actively participate in discussions during the week. An unlimited number of Auditors may apply and attend. 5-Day Auditors and Daily Auditors are equally welcome to attend.
About Our Clinicians
Clinician: Carolyn Hove
Ms. Hove has been the solo English horn player in the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1988. She has appeared as a soloist in many venues, including a recital on the acclaimed Dame Myra Hess Concert Series in Chicago and appearances with the La Jolla Chamber Music Society, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and many other leading ensembles.

Sac State Host/Professor of Oboe: Dr. Cindy Behmer
Dr. Cindy Behmer is a prominent freelance oboist and educator based in Sacramento, California. She has performed with the Reno Philharmonic, Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera, Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra, Stockton Symphony, Chamber Music Society of Sacramento, the Fresno Grand Opera, Fresno Philharmonic, Townsend and Stockton Operas, the Music in the Mountains Festival Orchestra, and many others.

Riverview Hall, with apartment style housing - named for its views of the American River, houses 436 residents and features a fitness center, cardio studio, study lounges, computer lab, game and movie lounge, laundry room, community, and classroom space for events.

On-campus & off-campus options are available within walking distance. Extra time has been allotted to allow for meals.
Parking
Parking is available in the six-story parking structure adjacent to our building (Capistrano Hall). Registered participants can purchase a $16 virtual weekly permit. You will need to create a parking Guest Account, if you don't already have one, then use the link which will be provided to you (available after June 1) to reserve your parking permit.
