Scholarships

Scholarships on Sac State's Scholarship Portal

The Department of Art sponsors several scholarships and awards programs for its students each year. Applications for these awards are accepted starting in October and winners are announced each Spring semester. To be eligible to win one of these scholarships, applicants must be active students and meet that scholarship's individual eligibility requirements during the semester the money will be awarded.

The deadline to apply for these scholarships is March 2, 2025 at 11:59 pm. Both the scholarship and award recipients will be announced at the Annual Awards Show in Spring 2025.

  • The Academic and Creative Excellence Award is a $1000 award to support an outstanding undergraduate or graduate Art major. Open to Sophomore, Junior, Senior, and Graduate students in good academic standing and an overall GPA of 2.0 for Undergrad and 3.0 for Grad.
  • The Jeannette B. Yuppa Scholarship is a $1000 award to support an outstanding undergraduate or graduate Art major who has chosen teaching at any level as a future goal. Two recipients are chosen a year.
  • The Marla Chicconi Memorial Endowed Art Scholarship is a $1500 award to support an outstanding undergraduate Art major with an interest in teaching. Open to Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students with a declared major in Art and an overall GPA of 2.0.
  • The Juanita and Jose Montoya Memorial Art Scholarship is a $1500 award to support an outstanding undergraduate Art major with an interest in teaching. Open to Junior and Senior students with a declared major in Art and an overall GPA of 2.7.
  • The ClayPeople Award is an award to support an undergrad or graduate Art student who is enrolled in a ceramics course in the year that they apply. A portfolio is required.
  • The Ruth Rippon Ceramic Scholarship is a $1000 award offered once a year to an outstanding student majoring in Studio Art, with an emphasis in ceramics, who shows promise in making ceramic art a career.
  • The Peggy Saunders Hall Memorial Scholarship is a $5,000 award to support an outstanding undergraduate Art student who has chosen teaching at any level as a future goal.

R.W. and Joyce Witt Art History Competition

The R. W. and Joyce Witt Art History Competition gives out two awards of $200 each. One prize will be awarded for each of the two following categories. Students can submit one entry to each category.

  • Category A: graduate or undergraduate art history research papers.
  • Category B: graduate or undergraduate art writing of any genre.

A faculty sponsor is required for each submission. Any applicant must be enrolled at Sacramento State in Spring 2025 and must have a declared major or minor in Art or Photography.
Any graduate student must have classified status and must be enrolled in the Studio Art MFA program or in a special major MA program in art, art history, art education, or art administration.

The deadline to apply is Februrary 14, 2025. Awards will be announced at the Student Awards Show. Apply today, don't wait until the last minute!

Awards Available in the Annual Student Award Show

The Department of Art and the University Galleries hold their annual Awards Show each spring. The exhibition is juried by two guest jurors and features work by current art students. The Awards Show exhibition includes several award categories as well as merit awards. The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as all matriculated and Open University students, enrolled at Sac State during the current academic year. Below are available monetary awards available to students.

  • The R. W. and Joyce Witt Scholarship Award in Studio Art for any Sacramento State student with a declared minor or major in Art or Photography. All media are eligible. Award amount varies per year.
  • The Frederick M. Peyser, Sr. Prize in Studio Art for any Sacramento State undergraduate. Only two-dimensional media (painting, photography, printmaking, mixed media, and digital, video and interactive works) are eligible. Award amount varies per year.
  • The Increase Robinson Memorial Fellowship Award is for classified graduate students in Studio Art. Entries may be in any medium. Each award is $1000. This award may be won only once.
