About North Central Information Center
About NCIC
The North Central Information Center (NCIC) is one of nine information centers in the California Historical Resources Information System (CHRIS). It works in close coordination with the California Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) and the Sacramento State Public History Program. NCIC maintains a portion of the CHRIS inventory of archaeological and architectural site records and study reports for the State of California, and provides cultural resources documentation to local governments, state and federal agencies, Native American tribes, individuals with responsibilities under the National Environmental Policy Act, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, and the California Environmental Quality Act, as well as to the general public.
Our service area consists of Amador, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, and Yuba counties.

Visiting NCIC
NCIC is located at California State University, Sacramento at 7667 Folsom Blvd., Folsom Hall Suite 2042, Sacramento, CA 95826. [map]
NCIC is open for in-house records searches for authorized users of the CHRIS (i.e. professional historians, archaeologists, and architects). Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30-4:30 (by appointment only). To schedule an appointment please contact NCIC by email or phone at (916) 278-6217. Please email a GIS shapefile or kmz file of your search area prior to your appointment.
Temporary parking passes are available for visitors.
Due to the sensitivity of cultural resources documentation, NCIC does not accommodate in-house records searches for unauthorized users of the CHRIS. Please view the CHRIS access policy.
If you want NCIC staff to complete a records search request please email a request form, topographic map of your search area, and, if available, a GIS shapefile or kmz file of your search area.
Submitting CHRIS Records to NCIC
NCIC prefers digital copies of CHRIS site records and study reports. These include:
- PDF copies of site records (e.g. DPR forms)
- PDF copies of study reports
- GIS shapefiles corresponding with site locations
- GIS shapefiles corresponding with survey coverage
NCIC asks users to send confidential digital records (i.e. archaeological) to us through our secure file transfer system. If you have confidential digital records to send to NCIC please notify us by email and we will provide you a link to use to transmit the documentation. If you have multiple folders to send please zip them. Non-confidential records (i.e. architectural documentation or study reports with no archaeological site information) can be sent by email. Records can also be mailed to us on a CD.
Because NCIC no longer maintains paper inventories of site records and study reports, hard copies will be scanned and shredded. To conserve resources, please make every effort to provide NCIC with digital materials.
