Leveraging Context for Organizational Change: Inspiration from Three California State University Campuses
(California Polytechnic, San Luis Obispo, Sacramento State, and CSU San Bernardino)
The California State University system emphasizes student success for all students. Academic and institutional leaders at three campuses will share their journey in becoming institutions of learning through learning. Each journey will be described as it is uniquely situated in the context of each campus’s mission, vision, values, and community.
Each campus in the California State University (CSU) system is regionally accredited by WSCUC, serves diverse communities across the state of California, and chases student success through system-wide initiatives such as the Graduation Initiative 2025. This initiative among others is focused on creating and improving opportunities for any student at a CSU campus to graduate in a timely manner prepared for the dynamism of demands in 21st century careers. The road to achieving these priorities is learning and improving using evidence to inform both progress towards realizing these goals and engaging in intentional and strategic improvement through outcomes assessment at all levels of the institution. These efforts have required varying degrees of organizational change at each institution. Academic and institutional leaders from each of three campuses will share their stories of organizational change in terms of the strengths and opportunities presented by their campus context. Each presentation will highlight issues of diversity and equity in organizational change efforts as well as lessons learned along the way. A discussion of the implications for organizational change and the impact of context will follow the brief presentations from California Polytechnic, San Luis Obispo, Sacramento State, and CSU San Bernardino.
Aha Moments from Faculty
Aha Moment from Dr. Xiaoyan Sherry Sun
With the technologies, the assessment results are automatically collected once the grading is done. There are very practical techniques that can be used by faculty directly in their courses for creating and importing learning outcomes (LOs) in Canvas, creating and importing rubrics, using the rubrics for assessment (and grading), and accessing the assessment data in Canvas and Anthology, etc.. For programs, it’s very important to take the top-down approach to assess program LOs. That is, the curriculum assignments can be designed and assessed based on the program LOs.
