Moving Relocation Loan for New Faculty

Newly hired faculty whose employment has not yet begun may apply for this loan to assist with moving expenses prior to their move. Priority will be given to high-cost relocation ($5,000 or more) with significant financial need.

Purpose: Applicants can request funds for reasonable and necessary expenses they will incur as a result of relocation to the Sacramento area. Examples of expenses include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Moving truck expenses
  • Gas expenses
  • Temporary housing expenses
  • Deposits for housing

Amount of Loan: Up to $5,000

Eligibility:

  • Prospective probationary faculty members who have signed an employment contract (offer letter for the upcoming academic year)
  • University staff and staff members of university auxiliary organizations may not apply.

Conditions:

  • The loan must be repaid within 90 days of start date, unless an extension is granted in writing by the Provost.
  • Any delinquent loan will be immediately converted to a payroll deduction, and the outstanding loan amount will be deducted in two installments from the faculty member’s paycheck.
  • Future requests for emergency loans are conditional on timely repayment of the moving relocation loan.
  • Exceptions to the above must be approved by the Provost.

Application and Selection Process:

To apply for the loan, applicants must:

  • Complete and submit the online application found here. Priority application review cycles will begin after July 20th and August 20th of each year.
  • Provide as much detail as possible when completing the application and attach supporting documentation for the costs associated with moving. The type of documents will vary depending on individual circumstances but should confirm that you have a financial hardship/need AND verify the amount of money you are requesting (e.g., invoices or estimates for moving expenses). Sensitive personal information should be redacted or blacked out (e.g., social security numbers, patient IDs, account numbers, etc.) on your supporting documents.
  • Include information about how the loan will be repaid within 90 days of your start date.

The Vice Provost for Faculty Success and/or the Director of Academic Resources will review applications. Applicants will be notified by email of the decision within three weeks of the deadline.
