Five Hornet alumni included in Sacramento Bee’s second Black Change Makers list
October 27, 2023
For the second year, The Sacramento Bee has recognized several Sacramento State alumni as Black “Change Makers,” who are “area leaders focused on making Sacramento and its neighboring communities a fairer and more just place.”
Change Makers are, as described by The Bee, people who “stand out as innovative problem-solvers, leaders who not only seek solutions, but change cultures to help others find a path to improving lives.”
The list, which includes 20 individuals overall, is part of the broader Change Makers project from The Bee’s Equity Lab, which began in February 2022. Several Hornets were also on the inaugural Top 25 Black Change Makers list.
Over the past year, Sacramento State alumni and staff have also made up significant portions of The Bee’s AAPI Change Makers and Latino Change Makers lists.
Hornet alumni on this year’s Black Change Makers list include:
- Michael Casper ’10 (Communication Studies), MBA ’23, chief operating officer, Improve Your Tomorrow, Inc.
- Nicholas Haystings ’16 (Mechanical Engineering), executive director, Square Root Academy
- Angelo Williams, MA ’07 (Education), Ed.D. ’10, chief deputy director, First 5 California
- Marcellene Watson-Derbigny ’93, MA ’95 (Psychology), associate vice president of student retention and academic success, Sacramento State
- Joshua Wood ’05 (Government), CEO, Region Business and partner, I Street Public Affairs
Williams is also a lecturer in the Sac State College of Education.
