Sacramento State has set a new record for spring enrollment, with a total of 28,165 students attending classes during the Spring 2016 semester. That’s an increase of 469 students – 1.7 percent – over last year.

In addition, the number of units those students are taking also has increased. “We have more students taking more classes than ever before,” says Student Affairs Vice President Edward Mills.

This spring’s average unit load (AUL) across all grade levels is 12.30, up from 12.11 last spring. The undergraduate AUL increased to 12.57 from 12.38, with the freshman AUL at 13.40.

“The increased average unit load means that our efforts to get more students to take 15 units or more per term are working,” Mills says. “And our colleges and departments are making more courses available for them.”

Sacramento State has focused on the graduation issue through a number of programs, including new software to better track students’ progress, and the hiring of an executive director of university initiatives and student success.

“This is all part of the push to improve graduation rates and decrease the time it takes to get a degree,” Mills says. – Craig Koscho
