Advanced Drawing Art 120

Credit:   3 Units  
Prerequisite:   Art 20B Room: KDM 268
Time:   M/T/W/Th, 2 pm - 5:30 pm, 6/1/04 -7/8/04
Portfolios & Sketchbooks Due: Thursday, 6/17/04 and Wednesday, 7/7/04
Midterm Review:   Thursday, 6/17/04
Final Student Exhibit and Presentation: Thursday, 7/8/04, ASL, 2 -5:30 pm

Text:   None.   Selected readings assigned by instructor.

Course Content:   Exploration of advanced drawing techniques, using materials deemed appropriate to development of personal style.   Students develop originality in process, critical visual thinking and awareness of contemporary drawing. Course Objectives:   Development of flexibility and confidence in drawing and awareness of drawing process, methods, materials, and contemporary references.   Upon exiting the course, the student will achieve the ability to collect ideas, develop personal approach to drawing, and exhibit competence in creating a body of work for presentation.

Requirements:   Completion of all research and projects. Homework will be assigned each week.   Oral participation in classroom critiques and discussions. Student is responsible for class assistance projects as assigned by instructor.   Regular attendance, make-up work for absences.   A maximum of 2 absences are allowed. Every absence thereafter will result in a .3 drop in the total grade point average.   Special consideration will be given to unavoidable absences (see instructor for make-up requirement). Course outline is subject to modification, depending on student response.

Cell phones are not permitted to be active inside the classroom.

Grading Policy:   Grade dependent on evaluation of all course work completed (inside and out of class), attendance and participation. Assignments, including critiques and reviews are graded equally. A =100-94, A- =93-90, B+ =89-87, B =86-84, B- = 83-80, C+ =79-77, C =76-74, C- =73-70, D+ =69-67, D =66-64, D- =63-60, F =59-0. Minimum assignment requirements: Development of a sketchbook / journal, which explores a variety of materials and approaches toward personal drawing goals.   Additional preparatory drawings on 18" x 24" paper.   A minimum of three large format finished works suitable for exhibition or presentation. Participation in class activities and assistance projects.   Completion of in class assignments designed to increase drawing skills.

Options for advanced students :   Choose #1 and at least one other option from the list.

1.  Research contemporary work and its relevance to personal style development.   Draw from   and write about the works of at least five contemporary artists that relate to your personal interests in style development in your sketchbook / journal.
2.   Students may participate in advanced versions of beginning drawing assignments in order to further understanding of drawing.
3.   Students may select artworks currently in progress that may be used as the basis for a body of drawings.
4.   More advanced students may develop a consistent body of self-directed drawings.
