Homework 3 - Color and Applying Gestalt Principles

Due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, Jun 20.

Part 1: ADDITIVE AND SUBTRACTIVE COLOR MIXING

color spectrum

COLOR--The electromagnetic spectrum above can be used to help answer the following questions.

1. If a patch of cloth only reflects back all wavelengths greater than 670 nm, what color will we perceive when the cloth is shown under a spotlight of normal white light & why?

If that same patch of cloth is shown under a spotlight that contains the following wavelengths (560, 610, and 680), what color will we perceive and why?

If that same patch of cloth is shown under a spotlight that contains the following wavelengths (480, 520, and 630), what color will we perceive and why?

2. A spotlight of 420 nm is shone onto the same white surface as a spotlight of 680 nm. What color of light will we perceive shining on that white surface and why? (Think about what cone receptors will be firing the most here.)

Part 2: GESTALT PRINCIPLES

Type all answers, but if you need to draw an additional picture to illustrate that is fine.

For the 9 Gestalt principles listed below, describe one everyday situation where our perception is related to that principle.

For example, for the principle of similarity, when we look at a bed of flowers we tend to perceptually group all flowers of similar colors or shapes together. (of course, come up with a different example than flowers for your answer and different from the other examples used in class).

When giving your answers make sure that you make it clear to me that you understand the principle. Explain why that example illustrates the Gestalt principle (i.e. don't just state "a bed of flowers", as that won't make it clear to me that you understand the principle of similarity).
