Lecture 1: Getting Started E-mail and Web Browsers

Introductions & admin tasks (roll, add cards, office hours, etc.) Overview of course; if you missed class, the course overview is the first document you'll encounter on our web page. Register online for your SacLink account if you do not already have an e-mail account. What's said and done in Cyberspace is not private. You don't enjoy the privacy protections that are available to you when you use the telephone or send a letter through the mail ('snail mail'). If you wouldn't want whatever you've said published in the newspaper, then don't say it. Email addresses are set up in this way: your_login_name@mail_machine_name.domain.institution_type For example, sac00000@saclink.csus.edu. This means the user login is sac00000, the machine used to hold the e-mail is named 'SacLink', the machine is in the 'csus' domain which is an 'edu' - educational institution.   Introduce web browsers (Netscape in particular) - launch Netscape NOTE: Instructions are given for the Windows environment in the University Student Computing Labs.   To "launch the web browser": Double click on the IP (Internet) Applications group Double click on the icon titled "Netscape" The web page you see when you launch Netscape in the lab is our main CSU, Sacramento web page.   Visit our class home page and create a bookmark by selecting Bookmark, Add Bookmark The URL for the home page is: http://www.csus.edu/indiv/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx   What is a URL Address: Discussion of URL's: A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is to the web what your house address is to you - it's the location of a web site in cyberspace. URL's are organized into parts, each of which designates a specific piece of the address code. Let's look at the web address for the CSUS news page: http://www.csus.edu/news/index.html http:// says "this is an address on the World Wide Web" www says "this web page lives on the CSUS main Web Server . is a separator -- just like the commas in your city, state designation csus says "this web page lives in a domain named csus" edu says "this web page lives at an educational institution" news says "the directory or folder where the information resides is in called news" index.html says "the name of the first document in this set of html (Hypertext Markup Language - i.e. Web) documents is named index" Actually, we ususally don't have to include the name of the document since most web servers use a name like 'default.html' or index.html' as their default starting document name.   To "visit a web site": If there's no link visible to the site you're interested in: Highlight the contents of the 'Location' section at the top of the browser window (click at the beginning of the line, then hold down the mouse button while you drag the cursor to the end of the text).   --  OR  --   Select 'New Location' under the file menu. Type in the new URL (Uniform Resource Locator, also known as the web address). A URL for the World Wide Web (WWW or W3) is all of the text which starts with "http://". It's VERY IMPORTANT that you enter the URL exactly as it's shown. One missing period, one misspelled word, one letter out of place, and it won't work. Try this now. If it doesn't work, check for misspellings or missing slashes or periods. If you still can't get it to work, ask for help. Tap the return key   If there's no link visible to your site but you have a bookmark for it: Click-hold on the work 'Bookmarks' in the menu bar Continue holding the mouse button down while you drag down to the site you want to visit Release the mouse button   To "bookmark a web site": Select "Add Bookmark" under the Bookmark file menu .     Eⅇ 117 Networking Analysis, Jean-Pierre R.
