Your task is the following: On each day for the period 17-27 September, go to the Big Bear Solar Observatory web site at
http://bbso.njit.edu/cgi-bin/LatestImages
1. Download and/or print the latest image of the Sun. If you cannot download and/or print the image, you will have to do the exercise on while visiting the Web site, and sketch what you see on a piece of paper.
2. On the printout or sketch of the Sun, indicate the date and time that the photograph was taken and the location of individual, isolated sunspots. Count the total number, Nspots . On the same printout or sketch, indicate the location of sunspot groups, and count their number Ngroups
3. Calculate the Wolf Number, Ri = Nspots + 10Ngroups, for that day and time.
4. For each spot and group, estimate the Wolf Classification and indicate it by placing the letter for the Wolf classification next to the appropriate spot/group on your printout/sketch.
Note: Make your observations on the screen, not the printout!
