Celestial Mechanics: Energy

The kinetic energy is given by:  KE_boxed.gif (1795 bytes)

The gravitational potential energy is given by:  PE_boxed.gif (1977 bytes)

In the absence of dissipative forces, the total energy is a constant, or the total energy is conserved

Note: Gravitational potential energy is negative since gravity is an inward force

Note: One can define a location where the gravitational potential energy is zero, since energy is a relative concept.
