Kid Pix Slide Show

VITAL INFORMATION
Subject(s):
Art, Science, Technology, Writing

Topic or Unit of Study:
Animals - the five types of vertebrates

Grade/Level:
1

Objective:
TLW create an "animal" that incorporates attributes from two or more vertebrate classes.

TLW draw their animal creation on Kid Pix.

TLW write text describing the attributes of their animal creation. The text will either be typed onto their picture by an adult, by the student, or by both together.

Summary:
Students will create an animal that has attributes from two or more vertebrate classes. The animal will be drawn on paper, then on Kid Pix. Students will also write a description of their animal, first on paper, then on their Kid Pix slide.

IMPLEMENTATION
Learning Context:
Students will first learn the basic attributes for fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. After hearing the book "Where the Wild Things Are", students will create their own imaginary creature that has attributes from two or more classes. This will be a fun way to apply and show what students have learned about the five classes of vertebrates.

Procedure:
1. Before the Animals unit begins, the teacher will demonstrate the computer program Kid Pix.
2. Students will be given individual time to explore Kid Pix.
3. Students will do a practice assignment on Kid Pix that is guided and supported by the teacher.
4. Students will create an imaginary animal, with attributes from two or more vertebrate classes, and draw their animal on paper.
5. Students will write a description of their animal, explaining the various attributes and how they help the animal adapt to its environment.
6. Students will be given time to draw their animal on Kid Pix.
7. Students will type, help type, or dictate their written description to an adult helper.

8.Teacher or aide will compile the Kidpix slides into a class slideshow.

Sample Student Products:
Attached are two student generated slide shows. I had five computers and 20 kids, so each slide show exibits 4 individual student's work. These can be used as examples to show students when introducing the project. You will need Kid Pix to run the slide shows.

Collaboration:
Students will work individually.

Time Allotment:
4 class periods. 30 Min. per class.

Author's Comments & Reflections:
Before having students create their animals they need to be given enough time to practice and get to know the computer program, in this case Kid Pix. Each student will be given a 30 min. class period to practice making a simple picture that uses all of the basic tools. Then they well get a second 30 min. period to create anything they want, experimenting with the tools and getting comfortable with the program and hardware (mouse, keyboard, on/off, etc.) After two practice sessions, the students will create their animal on paper, then draw it on the computer. From the beginning, emphasis should be placed on having fun and experimenting with a new way to draw so that students do not expect their computer generated picture to be perfect. Some first graders who are not comfortable or familiar with drawing on a computer may get easily frustrated or discouraged if they do not know what to expect.
