This lesson will take place prior to the powerpoint presentation on math drills. The PowerPoint presentation will be based on different math drills for different math functions. In this newsletter, the students will create a newsletter as a group and the direct content will be based on how to do math calculations faster using a multiplication table. The content of the presentation will be directly related to math problems as well as the importance of math in our daily lives. It will follow the powerpoint presentations. Other lessons include the students doing timed math drills and having discussions on the importance and use of math in our daily lives. Students will also learn about many other math function. Procedure: Groups will be pre-assigned by the instructor based on assessment. Groups of 2-3 will be on the computer and working together. They will present their finished work as a group in front of the class. 1) The students will be supplied with lecture and supportive materials training for Microsoft Word and the Internet. They will also recieve information and review on the use of multiplication tables. And a hand out requiring them to express the use of math in their daily lives. The basics of Word will be introduced with instruction of creation of Columns, Rows, Headers and Footers. The time allotted will be from 1 to 2 hours for background information. 2) Students will also be provided with a list of helpful links that they can use for their research. 3) The students will work in groups to create a newsletter. They will use their own math examples, apply the multiplication tables to math problems, and share their views of their daily use of math in their lives. The students will be allowed 4 separate one hour sessions. The first session will focus on searching the Internet for resources (pictures, etc...). The second through fourth sessions will focus on the actual project. The teacher will be available for the students as a resource for the entire time. 4) Each student will be responsible for creating one section of the newsletter, creating their own examples of math problems, art clips, and ideas of how math is used for them. Students will then collaborate in groups and add their portion of the assignment to a collaborate newsletter document created by the group of four. 5) Students will work independently to create their own set of math problems for the newsletter and be responsible for finding and downloading at least one graphic that enhances their article. A. First Session: A handout will be given to students as a guide to what content would be related and useful. A list of links will also be provide to assure all students gather the correct information and students don't waste excess time on poor internet sites. Students will write rough draft in class or for homework. B. Second session: Their combined math problems and ideas from the draft will be put into Word file, save in student folder. C. Third and fourth session: Working together on one computer, students will combine (cut/paste) their combined math examples and ideas into the groups final newsletter file. Import graphics. 6) Spell check, complete the final formatting, print. Newletters will then be presented in front of the class. |
