Prior to issuance of the Preliminary Credential - Level I
General Knowledge and Specific Skills
G-1. Each candidate demonstrates knowledge of current basic
computer hardware and Software terminology.
What do I already know about this? I think I am familiar with the basic
terminology such as CD-ROM, data, CPU, and other basic terminologies.
How did I learn it? I learned most of my computer skills from my two brothers.
I took some computer classes in elementary school and one in college.
What more do I need to learn? I need to learn what MHZ means. How much
memory a computer has and needs for certain applications.
G-2. Each candidate
demonstrates competency in the operation and care of computer Related
hardware (e.g., cleaning input devices, avoiding proximity to magnets,
Proper start-up and shut down sequences, scanning for viruses,
and formatting Storage media).
What do I already know about this? I know
that you should’t
put any magnets on computers or disks because they can erase or damage
them.
I know that you can clean keyboards with alcohol swabs. I know how
to format a floppy disk through my computer. Computers should always
be
shutdown
through the start up menu.
How did I learn it? Most of this I learned
from my brothers, father and from working at K Mart and Bella Vista
High School.
What more do I need to learn? I don’t know how to format my computer
or scan for viruses.
G-3. Each candidate implements basic troubleshooting
techniques for computer systems and related peripheral devices
(e.g., checking the connections,
isolating the problem components, distinguishing between software
and hardware problems) before accessing the appropriate avenue
of technical support.
What do I already know about this? The only troubleshooting technique
that I know is to reboot the computer and to check the electrical connections.
How did I learn it? From my brothers
What more do I need to learn? I need to learn how to troubleshoot different
types of hardware and software.
G-4. Each candidate demonstrates knowledge and understanding
of the legal and ethical issues concerned with the use of computer-based
technology.
What do I already know about this? I
know that you can’t
copy information off of the Internet without giving credit to the source.
How did I learn it? This is basic plagiarism that we learned not to
do in school
What more do I need to learn? I don’t
know what other legal and ethical issues there would be, so if there
are any I would need to
learn about
them.
G-5. Each candidate demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the
appropriate
use of computer-based technology in teaching and learning.
What do I already know about this? Using the Internet as a source
of information is good for the classroom. Teaching students how to
use
the Internet is
good. The use of computers linked to televisions can make efficient
use of computer technology for lesions.
How did I learn it? I learned this in
high school.
What more do I need to learn? I need to learn about power point.
S-1. Each candidate uses computer applications
to manage records (e.g., gradebook, attendance, and assessment records).
What do I already know about this? I don’t have specific experience
with software for managing records such as a gradebook or attendance
but I do have a lot of experience with software like Excel that has similar
functions that I’m sure are part of the educational software for
the previously listed tasks.
How did I learn it? Working as a project manager and balancing budgets
and estimating costs for projects.
What more do I need to learn? Maybe specific applications for gradebooks,
attendance, etc.
S-2. Each candidate uses computers to communicate
through printed media (e.g., newsletters incorporating graphics and
charts, course
descriptions, and
student reports).
What do I already know about this? I’ve made a few fliers for my
wife’s home preschool and soccer but not much else. Mainly using
Word.
How did I learn it? Just playing around with applications.
What more do I need to learn? The next level of production including
better graphics, animated video and sound would be cool.
S-8. Each candidate demonstrates the ability to
assess the authenticity, reliability, and bias of the data gathered.
What do I already know about this? I always try to gather research information
on line that has a name of a person maybe from a University. I did a
lot of medical research papers for a class once and looked for doctors
names and their references from their findings. I try to make sure the
people who write stuff on line have references of their own.
How did I learn it? I learned from college professors
What more do I need to learn? Maybe learn if there is an easy way of
finding out if the information you have found on the internet is authentic
and reliable.
S-9. Each candidate identifies student learning styles and
determines appropriate technological resources to improve learning.
What do I already know about this? I am a big visual person so seeing
someone doing something on a computer than them telling me what to
do works best. My boyfriend on the other hand would much rather have
someone
tell him what to do than have them show him.
How did I learn it? I learned by someone showing me.
What more do I need to learn? I would like to know what types of softwares
are out there for kids b/c I have never worked with kids and computers
before.
S-10. Each candidate considers the content to be taught and
selects the best technological resources to support, manage, and enhance
learning.
What do I already know about this? It all depends on what types of
learners your students are. It is probably best to have a few different
ways of
showing/teaching something so you get all of your learning styles
covered.
How did I learn it? The best way for kids to learn is to have them
do it themselves. When I am a teacher I want to do a lot of things
on the
computer such as research papers and power pointe. Things I learned
when I was in school.
What more do I need to learn? What are some good technological resources
out their for teachers as far as lesson plans.
S-11. Each candidate demonstrates an ability to create and
maintain effective learning environments using computer-based
technology.
What do I already know about this? Make sure that everyone is understanding
what you want them to understand. Plus, make sure the environment
is friendly and helpful. Some students do not understand things
at the
same rate. Demonstrate everything you do.
How did I learn it? I learned computer technology by having different
people throughout my life demonstrating/teaching and being patient
with me.
What more do I need to learn? Ummm…other things that help maintain
an effective learning environment using technology. I really do not know
what I need to learn b/c I don’t know too much about this topic.
