If you seek regular classroom activities, this course is not for you.

Special information
PORTUGUESE

At CSUS, Portuguese is taught by instructors with both accents: Brazilian and Continental Portuguese. There is a common misunderstanding that Brazilian and Continental Portuguese are two different languages and therefore, those wanting to learn one must not attend classes offered by the speaker of the other. This is a misconception that must be forgotten, for the essence of the language is the same.

Differences in accent, colloquialisms, vocabulary, and spelling do not render them different. This happens to other languages adopted by ther countries as well, such as English from England, the US, Scotland, and Australia, for example, and Spanish from Spain and Latin America, whose countries also have their differences. Each language has its own regionalisms, but the language remains the same. We call this a dialect.

In the Dept. of Foreign Languages, we agree that the course should emphasize equally both cultures and their similarities and differences.

Attention: All Portuguese courses have been cancelled for the time being. If you need private tutoring, please, contact Prof. Moratto via e-mail.

SPANISH 007

This is a web-based course. For the Summer of 2004, class meetings are on Tuesdays only, at Mariposa Hall 2000. The other days of the week, we work online. The first day of class will, therefore, be Tuesday, July 13, 2004.

It is crucial that students have their Saclink id and password to enter the WebCT, which is the program used for this course. Once you have them, you may go directly to WebCT . This is a password protected site and you can only enter if you are enrolled in the class.

Important Notice: There is a mandatory diagnostic exam on the first day of class; therefore, it is important that you come the very first day, especially if you are trying to add the class after Casper has been closed. Also, because there are several students wanting to add the class at this time, if you are enrolled but you do not come the first day, your place will be given to another student and you will lose your privilege of attending it.

Spanish 007 is a reading course, taught in the English language. In it, you will review your grammar, develop your vocabulary and learn the strategies required to be a successful reader of the Spanish language. There is a lot of reading involved (online and off-line) and the use of translators is not allowed.
