Educational Applications of Computers Teaching Unit

Spring, 1999

This Teaching Unit is worth a total of 75% of the grade for Rio Linda students following a revision made in class.

An example of a teaching unit can be found on the class web site by clicking on the following link: Sample Teaching Unit.

Develop a teaching unit that integrates the use of appropriate application software into the curriculum. The computer should be an integral, essential part of instruction. It does not, however, need to be the curricular focus of the instruction.
Notes on the teaching unit:

• As part of the overview, specify any particular knowledge and skills the students have at the beginning of the unit, including computer skills. Also identify the grade level, describe any unique characteristics of the target group, and resources available.

• If students are to create or add to a data base or spreadsheet, create enough of a sample file so that you can illustrate conclusions you expect they would be able to reach as part of the instruction.

The teaching unit should include the following, as a minimum:

For the unit

• unit overview, including
• description
• rationale
• statement as to how the unit fits into the curriculum
• list of goal statements for the unit

For each detailed lesson (4 to 5 days)

• description
• list of objectives (stated in behavioral terms)
• materials and other resources needed (e.g., almanacs)
• lesson plan
• method for evaluating student learning

For other days

• a paragraph or two describing what the students will be doing that day

Self-evaluation should include the following, as a minimum:

• changes that would improve your unit and/or lesson(s)
• improvements in the database/spreadsheet that would make it more useful

Bring your data files and a printed copy to class. Word processing, data base and spreadsheet files may be copied from your disk. Turn in a printed copy of all materials. Keep a copy of any hard copy materials you submit.
