Problem Solving and Computers
Teacher Education 233 (3 units) Fall, 1999

Course Description: This course focuses on the use of technology in the classroom within a problem-solving context. Participants will use application programs (e.g., data base management, word processing, hypermedia) and web authoring and graphic tools to explore and present problem-solving strategies.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will:

  1. understand the connections between thinking skills and problem solving;
  2. be able to identify curricular situations where the use of problem-solving strategies and technology may be appropriate;
  3. be proficient in developing problem-solving strategies that integrate completely with the existing curriculum;
  4. know how to gather data and resources using the world wide web;
  5. have learned to construct and upload a web page or site;
  6. have become accustomed to using e-mail to communicate with other members of class regarding class assignments;
  7. present the research and conclusions to a curricular problem in a web page or site.

Course Grading

  1. Class attendance, preparation and participation; (25%)
  2. Research project and web page production; (50%)
  3. Final examination. (25%)
