Exercises for Deductive Implication

Directions:  Identify the premises and conclusion of each of the following examples.  Determine whether the premises deductively imply the conclusion.

1.    The president says Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.. The president is an honest man. So, Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.

2.    All ferrets are ferocious.  Bob is a ferret.  So, Bob is ferocious.

3.    Everyone who eats at the Outback likes meat.  Sandy likes meat.  So, Sandy eats at the Outback.

4.    The launch will be delayed if the weather doesn't clear.  So, if the weather clears, then the launch won't be delayed.

5.    Jerald likes nibblies.  So Jerald likes nibblies or Jerald likes humus.

6.    Leanne doesn't like anyone who doesn't say thank you.  Bob never says thank you. So, Leanne doesn't like Bob.

7.    The earth is approximately spherical.  The earth is a planet.  So, all planets are approximately spherical.

8.    Reggie has beaten everyone he has played.  So, if Reggie has played Moe, then he's beaten him.

9.    Hamburger is a vegetable.  Vegetables cause insanity in mice.  Therefore, hamburgers cause insanity in mice.

10.    There are fourteen days in September.  Therefore there are 2 days in September.

11.     Nobody likes me.  So I don't like me.

12.    I'm angry because I'm stupid, and all stupid people are angry.

13.    If Berman interrupts me one more time I'm going to kill him.  If I kill Berman, I'll go to jail.  So, if I don't go to jail, then Berman won't interrupt me one more time.

14.    Rescher told me that the bus stops running at midnight.  Rescher is a bus driver.  So, the bus stops running at midnight.

15.     I hate you because I hate you.

16.     You can't be both a man and a woman.  So, you're either a man or you're a woman.

17.     The worst kind of sadness, is the sadness of being lonely.  Frieda is afflicted by the worst kind of sadness.  Therefore  Frieda is covered with Cheez Whiz.  

18.      Some rats are rodents.  So, not all rodents are rats.

19.       I'll only go out with Gabe if he takes a shower.  I know he'll take a shower to go out with me.  So, I'll go out with Gabe.

20.        Someone is not here today.  Kwan is someone  So Kwan is not here today.

21.      Alexis, you're not fat.  Because if you're fat, then I'm fat, and I'm not fat!

22.      Blackjack is a pirate or rabbits eat people.  Blackjack is not a pirate.  So, rabbits eat people.
