Coordinating a 5-day Visit of Ten Professors
from Japan

Being a part of a project called
“National University Project of the Eight on Faculty Development for International Student Mobility”
in August 21-25, 2006

On August 21 – 25, 2006, I coordinated a visit of ten professors of eight different Japanese national universities. These visiting professors, who are experts in various fields, serve as chief coordinators for their international programs at their respective universities and teach their classes in English. They are also representatives of a project called “National University Project of the Eight On Faculty Development for International Student Mobility.” This project, funded by the Japanese government, is associated with 28 national universities across Japan. They chose Sacramento State, McGill University, and Bradley University to learn approaches and strategies of faculty development programs at these universities, including how faculty incorporate technology into their daily instruction.

Currently, Japanese national universities are in the process of preparing their faculty to meet the demands of a global era and begun offering classes in English to international students as well as Japanese students. This delegation will share their faculty development experience with members of 28 national universities and promote faculty development programs to improve teaching and learning at these universities.

We are very honored to host these ten professors. We had a nice welcome reception - Click HERE to view pictures.

What is the purpose?

The main purpose of their visit is to learn about faculty development program at US universities, enhance their teaching in English, and learn how to incorporate technology into their daily teaching. The international programs of these eight universities attract many students from oversea. Therefore, the mission of this group is also to analyze faculty development models (approaches and strategies), identify its strengthens, and introduce them to other faculty members in 28 Japanese national universities.

Why Sacramento?

Last March, Professor Noboru Toyama at the University of Electro-Communications contacted me since he saw my presentations on how I incorporate technology into my daily teaching at WebCT conferences in San Diego and Orlando, Florida. He asked me if I could coordinate the faculty development program for a group of professors of Japanese national universities and I agreed to do it. As a junior faculty, I have actively participated in various faculty/professional development programs (e.g. Teaching Using Technology, Service Learning, etc.) at Sacramento.

What did I do?

Project Goals and objectives: By the end of the faculty development, participants will be able to:

  • Gain knowledge of the CSUS faculty development programs;
  • Identify effective skills necessary to teach various subjects to International students (China, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico, Bulgaria, and also USA, Australia and Great Britain) using English in Japanese National University context;
  • Understand how technology and a course management systems (e.g. WebCT) haves been used to enhance teaching and learning;
  • Demonstrate basic skills necessary to teach International students in Japanese universities effectively.

Goal 1: Gain knowledge of the CSUS faculty development programs

Accomplished by:

  • Having meetings with faculty of the following faculty development offices:  (alphabetical order)

Goal 2: Identify effective skills necessary to teach various subjects to International students (China, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, Mexico, Bulgaria, and also USA, Australia and Great Britain) using English in Japanese National University context

Accomplished by:

  • Attending lecture/workshop sessions by experts in the field
  • Identifying participants’ strengthen and weakness in teaching their subjects in English
  • Individual/group consultation with Professor Julian Heather for classroom teaching and Professor Constance Carter for course syllabus.
  • Individual/group discussions with ATCS & CLT consultants and faculty mentors
  • Observing teaching practices of various subjects

Goal 3: Understand how WebCT has been used to enhance teaching and learning

Accomplished by:

  • Attending workshop/talks by faculty who are using WebCT as a tool of instruction
  • Visiting Academic Technology & Creative Services to see WebCT exemplary courses
  • Using WebCT 6 as a teaching and learning tool for this faculty development program
  • Attending WebCT workshop

Goal 4: Demonstrate basic skills necessary to teach International students in Japanese universities effectively.

Accomplished by:

  • Revising course syllabus by incorporating learning objectives and assessments commonly used in US universities
  • Do a 5-minute presentation on 1-2 key concept(s)/word(s)/term(s) in a lecture format on the last day after having practiced for four days
  • Discuss what you learned in this faculty development program and how you may want to share your learning experience

Who helped this project?

I worked with a number of centers, faculty, staff, and students. First, we created a short video (13 minutes) to explain about CSUS faculty development program. In this video, seven experts speak about principles of faculty development. They are: Rosemary Papa, Director, CTL, Prof. Educational Leadership; Kimo Ah Yun, Center Associate and Prof. Communication Studies; Jean-Pierre Bayard, Director, Academic Technology & Creative Services (ATCS); Mary Reddick, Head of Online Curriculum Library Services; Marlon Nance, Instructor, Geology; Julian Heather, Director, Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program; and Kathy Moore, Prof. Spanish.
