READ AND HEED!!!! UNIVERSITY POLICIES CONCERNING ADDING AND DROPPNG COURSES STUDENTS: If you fail to read, understand, and abide by these policies, you may face an extremely unfortunate situation involving the denial of a petition to add or drop a course. ADD POLICIES Until the Add Deadline (end of second week of instruction). Adds may be accomplished through CASPER or, if a class is unavailable through CASPER, by submitting an add petition for approval by the instructor and department. From Add Deadline to Census Date (end of fourth week of instruction). Submit an add petition for approval by the instructor and department chair that details the serious and compelling reasons why you were not able to add by the add deadline. The Department will process the add. After Census Date. Submit an add petition for approval by the instructor, department chair, and College Dean that details and provides documentation that a Department/University administrative error prevented your enrollment in the class by the Census Date. Bring approved petition to Admissions and Records. DROP POLICIES Until the Drop Deadline (end of second week of instruction). Call CASPER.From Drop Deadline Until Census Date (end of fourth week of instruction). Submit a drop petition for instructor and Department Chair approval. The Department will process the drop. From Census Date to End of 6th Week of Instruction. Submit a drop petition for instructor and Department Chair approval and bring approved petition to Admissions and Records. Serious and compelling reasons must be given. A "W" will be assigned. After 6th Week of Instruction. Submit a drop petition for instructor, Department Chair, and College Dean approval and bring approved petition to Admissions and Records. Drops will be approved only if career-related or medical reasons beyond the control of the student are documented and the problem occurred after the Census Date. A "W" will be assigned. No drops will be processed after the last day of classes. REASONS FOR THE UNIVERSITY DROP POLICY AT CSUS Impacted Classes. The drop policy attempts to get students to make decisions about staying in classes prior to the Add/Drop deadline so that if the decision to drop is made, it will be possible for another student to add the class prior to the Census date. This is of benefit to the student who can add the class and to the University which will get budgetary credit for students who enroll in classes by the Census date.Repeat Course Policies. Some departments limit the number of times a student can repeat a course to a fixed number of repeats. If a student could drop for any reason up to the last day of class, it would be equivalent to a "free" repeat. The student, in effect, could repeat the course and avoid the consequences of a poor grade, thus getting around departmental academic standards. Taxpayer Dollars. An additional student in a class causes some additional costs - periodic duplication of course materials, grading time, and the like. The drop policy attempts to get students to make early decisions about staying in a class so that those costs can be avoided.
