Grade: 4-5
Objective: To Review multiplication and division in a fun setting by encouraging the learning of math concepts through a game.
Materials: Plastic ping pong balls. Place markers (we used star cut outs), crayons, bag, shoebox, poster board (or paper), laminator if feasible, and prizes.
Anticipatory set: Class will begin with a rendition of the song B-I-N-G-O, while we ask, "Who wants to play BINGO today?"
Procedures:
1.Each student is given a blank laminated (so it can be reused) bingo sheet.
2. A board is put in front of the class with the numbers that will be drawn so the students can follow along (check for understanding).
3. Each student will pull a ball out of the bag with a problem on it. The problem is read out loud in class.
4. The students will then write the answer to that problem on their board in crayon. Remind the children to write neatly.
5. The students will fill in the board at their desk in whatever order they choose. At this point teachers should be circulating to make sure all of the boards are being filled in completely.
6. The chosen balls will be placed in a shoebox that will be used later to pick the problems for the actual game.
7. A teacher will draw one ball at a time, reading the problem out load. The students must answer the problem correctly (and individually) and fill in that square on their board.
8. The first person to get a row of answers correct will win. After a winner is declared, the game will continue until everyone’s board is completely covered. The numbers are then erased and if desired, the game is started over.
Diversity: In order to work for learners at all levels, make sure to begin the activity by working the problems out together. There is a perfect opportunity for this while the children are putting the numbers on the board. Also, this game can be done in pairs. Placing a student who excels in math with a student who may need some assistance, could benefit both children.
