ENGL 197M Recent American Films
In this course, we will view films that portray militarized masculinities to examine multiple and contradictory gender formations. While gender studies has, in the past, focused primarily on women and feminisms, in this class we will examine the costs and privileges that accompany masculine social formations through films and readings. This course will focus specifically on militarized masculinities in consideration of our ever-increasing military-industrial growth in the U.S. and overseas. Some questions we will explore in this course are: How is masculinity defined? What are the benefits and limitations of masculine social formation? How do politics and economics play a role in forming social dynamics in intra- and inter-gender relationships?
